Victorian Britain

Whilst looking for my "lost" g.grandad I came across a census entry which included children aged 5, 7 and 9 who were working as "Doffers", so I googled the word to see what it meant and found this site.

I know the site is about Leeds, to which I have no connection, but I'm sure the information would apply to many other cities.   The whole site is good, so if you click on home, there are many topics to choose from.  Whichever one you choose, if you then click on development, you get a list of centuries to choose from, starting with 1600.

Daval

I've stretched out my original link as yours didn't work for me.  It took me to a page which said "article not available", although it did give an option to go to Site Home.  To find out about working conditions for young children, using your link you need to go to Home, then choose Poverty and Riches, then 1800-1900, then on the RHS, choose Children in the Factories.  It makes very grim reading.

My mistake.
Should work now but superfluous since you've now sorted yours.
It is a really interesting link Lizzie.
Was on it for some time this afternoon.

Me too, I've saved the site so that I can dig in and out when necessary and also show it to my grandchildren when they are complaining about not having new clothes, new toys etc.
