How to order a marriage cert?
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 19:20 GMT (UK) »
I'm fairly new at research on the IOM. I want to order a marriage certificate and was wondering how I go about doing so. It is for an extracted record off of IGI.

Thanks

cheapest is to borrow the mormon film of the official parish reg transcriptions
(film numbers under genealogy at www.manxnotebook.com)
otherwise via General registry Douglas (no credit cards) - contacts see again manxnotebook under refs

Thank you for your response.

Just one question. Will the Morman record give me the father's names?

Thanks

hello Mab
If the marriage took place after July 1837(Civil Registration Act) it will give father's name, occupation & address also ages of bride & groom & groom's occupation & also of course names of witnesses.

Thanks Jim for the info.

There is an extracted record - 1846 - and a submitted record - 1835. I understand the extracted records are more accurate so I think I'll try to get a copy of the 1846 one.

Thanks again everyone for your help.

Please note that the UK 1837 act did NOT apply to the IoM (it is not part of the UK!) - civil registration started in 1877/8 though there was voluntary registration earlier (very little used until 1850's and then only very very few)

The LDS microfilmed the records in the Rolls office in 1944 - these included the 1911 official transcription of all extant Parish Register - this transcription is extremely good (I've only found 1 error in looking at several original registers and that was minor) - if the child is illegitimate then the fa's name might not be given (sometimes there are proceedings in Chancery court for maintenance)
If you give the name + date I may well have details - otherwise try http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl?noframes;

Frances,

I just made an amazing discovery on the first website that you gave me. I was looking around and I found a memorial inscription that I think if I'm reading it right gives me all the answers I need  :-\

St Peter's Peel

Sacred To the memory of Amelia CRELLIN of Close e Geary, Kirk German wife of William CALLISTER who departed this life March 24th 1862 aged 53 years
Deligtful truth though young in years she stood prepared to die
Her happy spirit took its flight to dwell with Christ on high
also Leonora CALLISTER wife of Henry KINVIG who died the 29th day of September 1864 aged 49 years.

So Leonora's father was William Callister    :)

Leonora was Henry's first wife and I think his second wife may have been related to her some how. Now I know which Leonora I'm dealing with (there were two or three possibles) I can figure out the relationship.

Thanks for all your help  :D

She's not a daughther of William and Amelia. I just looked at the dates again  ???

Leonora must be William's sister maybe...a relative anyway. Drat  :P
