Hello Outlaw
The William Newman on the 1871 census is my William. I have him on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census returns. I have his marriage and banns certificates. Banns were called at St. Mary Magdalene Church Littleton Middlesex in December 1869 and his was married at Christchurch Brixton Rd Lambeth on 8th January 1870.
On his marriage certificate his fathers name is given as Joseph. His occupation is stated as 'Shepherd'.
What I can't find is a birth certificate for him. On the 4 census returns he gives his place of birth as Cricklade. The Family records office at Trowbridge say that no Newmans were baptised in Cricklade between 1840/50. I can't find him on the BMD site or on 1837online. There were 2 male Newmans registered in the Cricklade area between 1840/50
I have both certificates. One is the Henry born to Joseph and Jane [Gleed] Newman of Purton, He turns up on the 1871 census return still living in Purton. The other one, also born to this couple in 1843 at Purton. I believe this one to be their eldest son James. he is also still living in Purton on the 1871 census. I would dearly love to trace my William back to Wiltshire but I now don't know where to look. I Know he was at Littleton in Middlesex in December 1869 but where was he before that? I have a complete brickwall!! Thanks for your help anyway, it is much appreciated. Mistyrose

Hi Mistyrose
perhaps he had a different surname at birth and then his mother married joseph newman later and had william's name changed.
this was the case with someone in my tree and i spent ages looking for the wrong birth name ???

Thanks Paula, It could be that he was registered under his mothers surname if she and Williams father were not married at the time. The only other long shot is a William Newman baptised at Calne on 5th November 1848 to a Mary Newman no father mentioned.  In ther 1851 Wiltshire[Calne Union Workhouse] census return [HO107/1837 067 folio 049] There is a Mary Newman Unmarried aged 38 [PA] Farm Servant Born Christian Malford. Emily Newman Unmarried aged 12 [AP] Scholar Born Purton and a William Newman aged 8 [PA] born Bremhill. In the minutes of the Calne book of meetings of the Poor Union dated 2nd July 1851 and I quote 'The Case of Mary Newman and Children'
"A letter from the Poor Law Board was produced relative to the case of these paupers and stating that the pauper's residence in the parish of [Bramhill?] is broken but at the time of her readmission to the workhouse the pauper appears to have been a destitute wayfarer or wanderer and therefore on that ground is chargeable to the common fund of the union..." There is also an entry in the BMD Deaths June 1852 of a  Mary Newman Calne 5a 53
Now is this the Mary from the Workhouse. If it is was there a note in the Poor Union Minutes as to what happened to her children after her death? Emily being born at Purton seems to fit. There was a Mary Newman born to Joseph and Jane [Haskins] Newman at Purton. In fact there are 2 on the IGI site one in 1812 and one in 1819. Was this Mary the Daughter of Joseph and Jane [Joseph was the Miller of Ridgeway Mill on the 1851 census]. Did Mary's Children return to her family after her death. Is Cricklade the first place William remembers, is this  why he puts it on the later census returns? Was his grandfathers name Joseph. Who knows....... Mistyrose.
