Hi Paula,
I think it is quite likely that Joseph the Miller would be pushing up daisies in 1861. I think I will plum for Jonah[or is it Joseph] The farmer at Castle Eaton, William's uncle?

Hello Paula,
This is a bit puzzling, A real mixed up family!! O.K. on the IGI it gives Mary Ann's [Mary Newman's middle daughter] place of christening as Purton I think it is quite likely that she was born in the Purton Union Workhouse as was her younger sister Elizabeth. On Elizabeth's details on the 1851 her place of birth is given as Purton Union. Now heres the Christian Malford connection. On the Calne Union Workhouse 1851 Census Mary Newman gives her place of birth as 'Christian Malford'. I can't find a Mary Newman born at Christian Malford of that age and seeing all her daughters were born in Purton on the IGI I think it all points to her being from here plus Joseph the Miller had daughters of the right name and approx. age. Perhaps I am wrong but I have no other line to follow at present. What with William's place of residence on his marriage certificate being wrong to the father query!!! No wonder I have this head banging feeling!!!June :'( ::) :o :( :-X

Just had another thought with regards to Mary Newman..... 3 births within 3 years at Purton the last one being Dec 1841. Does she appear in the 1841 census for Purton [in the Workhouse maybe?] Have these children all got the same father.... Was she in some sort of relationship??? :o June

Hello Paula, Heres another twist on the William Newman saga. I have just discovered from Audrey on the BVRI look up that Joseph and Jane Newman [The Miller and his 2nd wife] had a son Joseph Bpt: 25/12/1815. Now was our Mary[ bpt. in Christian Malford on the 1851 census at Calne] in a relationship with him and took his name. Anythings possible! Mistyrose

Hello Outlaw, I took your advise and crossed referenced these William's with the 1871 census returns, Could not match 4 of them. Tried to match them on BMD site to a marriage to a Joseph Newman. No luck. I did a similar thing some time ago with all the William Newman's of the right age group on the 1851 Wilts census. The only one I could not account for was William from The Calne Workhouse.
