Hello Paula
I received a copy from the Wilts Record Office yesterday of William Newman Christening at Calne 5/11/1848 son of Mary Newman. They were in the Workhouse then!! I went back into the LDS IGI site and got the batch number from Emily's Christening on 12/05/1839 at Purton
[batch No: C022983]. Surprise, surprise!!!
Mary had 2 more daughters both christened at Purton. Mary Ann Christened 16/02/1840 and Elizabeth 19/12/1841. So... as they were not in the Calne workhouse with her I went looking for them in the Purton area on the 1851.
I think I have found Elizabeth in Castle Eaton [HO107/1833 157 014] living with a William Smith and his wife Eliza and Mary Ann living [HO107/1833 156 003] as the niece of a Jonah Newman and his wife Catherine also in Castle Eaton, he is a farmer of 484 acres. The question is.... Is the death of Mary Newman in Calne in 1852 the Mary from the workhouse? [I have sent for the certificate]. If it is...... did William get sent to Jonah [or could it be Joseph!!] and Catherine.
It is getting quite intriguing. June
