Alfred Gilbert Boer War Soldier
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 20:28 GMT (UK) »
My great grandad served in the Royal Artillery in India then the Boer War and WW1
I have his service records but they are really difficult to read and there are many abbreviations etc.
Any advice please on how I should proceed?

Verification of his Medal Record for the Boer War references the 38th & 68th Battery RFA. Does anyone know where I should go from here to find out where he was sent in South Africa etc?

His Boer War records are at Kew assuming they exsist. That's where I had my
grandfathers from but I had to pay a researcher to dig them out.

I have his service record but its really difficult to read and there are lots of abbreviations. What I was after was some reference material that would detail what the 38th Battery, 68th Battery etc actually did during the war.

Amongst my grandfathers records it has a page entitled "Roll of individuals entitled
to The South Africa Medal & Clasps".On it it shows where he served & in what capacity.Do you have one of those?

Dear Jim,

From ABWMV Research Services Medal Verification. Details for A Gilbert Driver Number 83065

The Queens SA Medal appears on nominal roll WO100/138 P41 38th Battery
Number AG2/M/592 Medal with three clasps. To 6 Depot RFA
The clasps cover Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal.
The signed by place and date are not shown on the medal verification form I received.

The Kings SA Medal appears on Roll WO100/307 P221 Number AG2/M/10557
The two clasps are SA 1901 and SA 1902. Record states unit 38th Battery RFA.
Transferred to 68th Battery RFA 31 January 1902.

The next page for the Kings SA Roll WO100/307 P 338 number ag2/m/7523 says Sent home to No 6 Depot 18 July 1902
Signed by WEClark Cpt RFA Comdg 68th Battery RFA Place Limerick 21 December 1902.
I would also like you to have a look at his service records which I'm finding almost impossible to read but the files are too large to attach. Prior to the Boer War he served in India and afterwards in WW1
Regards
Chris
