Illegible occupation on 1841 census
« on: Friday 30 November 07 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help decipher the occupation of my gt-gt-gt-gt grandfather  Alexander Rawlins in the 1841 census for Shoreditch,London attached (Ref HO 107/709/6 page 21 for anyone who has access and wants to compare lettering with other entries).
The whole page of the image is very faint but he lived at 55 Old St-Rd,aged 30 with his wife Jane and 5 children.
I cant find him in 1851 census at all (?) but by 1861 he has become a "proprietor of houses" with a servant.

Any suggestions welcome: I have an idea as to the first word but don't want to pre-empt other views !

Thanks in advance
Adrian

The proper reference is HO107 piece 709 book 6 folio 37 page 21.

His occupation looks like timber merchant.

I would agree with Stan - Timber Merchant. For those who want to check, he's indexed as Ramline  ::)

Gadget, he's indexed correctly on Origins and Find My Past. Is it Ancestry you mean that's got it wrong?

I agree that he's definitely a timber merchant in 1841.

Yes - I usually go there first and then Findmypast  :)

The Surname has been written over as if to clarify it but obviously made it worse for some transcribers.

My first thought was also Timber Merchant .... but it's nothing like Merchant a few lines down the page.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.
