1861 Census lookup - Smith or Savage
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 00:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi all from Oz 8)

I am looking for some vital information for my G2 grandmother from 1861.

In 1851 Ann Smith was located in Wimpole aged 18. Her daughter, Mary Ann,was then 2 months of age. I know she moved to Middlesex by 1864 but she does not appear in the 1861 Middlesex census. So I guess that she was still in Wimpole in 1861.

Sometime before 1860 she married a John Savage (age, location unknown) so she may appear in 1861 as Ann Smith or Ann Savage.

Any news gratefully received.

G'day James

Sorry, but Ann does not appear in Wimpole in 1861, either as Smith or as Savage (there were no Savages at all in Wimpole). Her father and brother were still there though:
RG9/1017/116B Wimpole
James Smith head widower 59 garden lab b Wimploe
James Smith son unmarr 24 garden lab b Wimpole

Regards

David

Hi David,

Many thanks for your response. In many respects this is good news, as she must have been already living in, or near, Middlesex. Anne's 'husband', John Savage, is the mysterious one. No trace of him anywhere other than his daughter Emily's (b 1864) birth certificate. He came from nowhere it seems, and vanished before 1871. I was hoping to find the family together in 1861 somewhere. I will turn my attention toward Middlesex.

I'm also grateful for the news on James Smith, Anne's father. That adds to his story.

Many thanks again.
