2 Hepzibah Bailey Birth dates
« on: Friday 30 November 07 16:59 GMT (UK) »

Hepzibah Bailey was born 7 Oct 1821 , daughter of James and Lydia Bailey.
On I GI there is a James Bailey married to Lydia Smith June 1802. The IGI shows them with several children born between 1803 to 1809 and includes one Hepzibah born 1804.
My question is whether the child born in 1804 had died and is it likely that Lydia Bailey( nee Smith)  and James continued adding to their family with a second Hepzibah in 1821?
Any help would be appreciated.

Prue,   The IGI have two extracted entries from the Sharnbrook PR so I would say they are genuine baptisms. I will check the PR when I get home tonight to see if there is a burial between 1804 & 1812.

Hi Prue
I think it highly likely that the second Hepzibah belongs to the same couple. Widowed Lydia is living in Sharnbrook with her son Smith Bailey in 41/51 - this would suggest that she is the Lydia Smith  that married James Bailey in 1802. As well as 2 Hepzibahs they had 2 Smiths (or possibly 3 as the Smith living with her is only 25 in 51 and the last Smith Bailey baptism was in 1817). However it is possible James married again to a second Lydia but I can only see the one marriage. I'm sure someone can help you out with relevant deaths. And someone already has!

Hephzibah Bailey age 16 buried at Sharnbrook on 27 Nov 1819.
Smith Bailey age 1 buried 10 Sept 1816
Smith Bailey age 6 mths buried 6 Feb 1818

There's no James Bailey buried in Sharnbrook. The closest is James Bailey 70 on 21 Apr 1826 at Souldrop which is only a mile from Sharnbrook, but he looks a tad on the old side

John - was he a widower on marriage in 1802, and was he of Souldrop? (Actually I think you'd better forget my Souldrop theory. The Elizabeth who married James there wasn't buried until 1823 age 78, so it looks as though the James age 70 was the one who married in 1774)

Hi,

Thanks Jan and John for your help. the gap between the first births and the second made me doubtful but now with the burial dates of the first children it looks right.
I haven't any verified dates for James Bailey but a possible birth  abt.1777
any details would be great.
thanks,
Prue

You're welcome

You can forget the 1777 birth. That's just a guess by the LDS member who submitted the entry. If they don't know the baptism details they deduct 25 years from the marriage date if its the groom, or 21 years if it's the bride, to arrive at the birth year, which can be hopelessly inaccurate. To compound the problem they also put the parish of the marriage as the birthplace of the party - this too is is usually wrong.

Here's an interesting bit you'll never seen in an online database.

From Sharnbrook PR baptism on  27 Feb 1804 of Hephzibah, daughter of Jas & Lydia Bailey *

* This entry has a footnote. "Only named Christened in the church June 20th 1806 entered here by mistake in my absence. T.W.Ward vicar"

June 20th 1806 has baptism of Robert son of Jas & Lydia Bailey

David, the 1802 marriage does not say James is a widower.

One of James & Lydia's children Sarah chr Aug 16 1803 was buried 18 Sept 1803 Sharnbrook.

Going back further to Sept 29 1737 there is a Thomas Bayley who married Eliz Woodham, Now I know someone with interest in Woodhams  !

Could James be son of Robert & Elizabeth Bailey, pauper; he was baptised in Bletsoe 25 Sept 1785
