Marchant - Help please
« on: Friday 30 November 07 21:56 GMT (UK) »
This is my first use of RootsChat.
I've been researching on and off for several years, and am stuck on one person (Arthur Henry Marchant).
I have his marriage certificate (1896 - Preston), and hence know his father's name and his supposed age. I cannot find him in the Register of births for England and Wales, although he was a Private in the Queen's Lancashire Regiment ,and is likely to be from the Preston area.
Any ideas where I might look, please?

Start at the 1901 census.
Can you locate him or if not, give us an idea of what his details (& wife/kids) are to have a look on your behalf.

Because Arthur was married in Lanashire and was in the Lancs regiment. It doesn't necessarily mean he was born in Lancashire.  If His father was also in the army he could have been born anywhere. If he is of age on his marriage cert There are a couple of birth that might fit,one in Middlesex and one in Wiltshire.I have also looked at the census,B.M.D index there are no Lancashire births or death at all for any of the many Arthur Henry Marchants. The only mention of him is his marriage.

Thanks, Celia and Pauline J. The one born in Marlborough, Wilts is not the right one (wrong father).
Here are the details:
Married to Jane Ann Ashcroft on 7 Oct 1896 in Preston. Certificate says he was  22 years old (his wife was 27) and that his father was Frank (Postal Parcels Sorter). He was dead by 1907 when she remarried.
In the 1901 census, she appears as "married", but there is no mention of him.
Only known child was Constance Evelyn Marchant, born 21 July 1897 in Preston.

Most grateful for any help.

Hi Quicksilver

Who were the witnesses on the marriage cert - sometimes they are relatives?

There are more Frank MARCHANTs than I thought there would be!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Given the years concerned, it seems likely that he was in the Boer War, so I searched for Lancashire Regiment and Boer and the first result was a Rootschat topic!

There might be something to help in that post

Thanks Osprey. That link looks interesting. Now to find out how to trace the people by their personnel numbers.

In answer to Arranroots, the witnesses were apparently not relatives.not
