Hi There

Thank you all for your help, your all very quick off the mark.
The person was born in Renfewshire...Neilston looks correct then.

I never guessed it meant his/her mark, but if everyone marks with an X how would anyone actually know who's mark it is? Would the registrar  have to  witness who made the mark and then his signature verifies it was made by that person. We live in an age where most people can write or at least ( I guess sign their name ) and cross reference or for the most part see a name written......was just wondering.

Not sure on the registrars name though...they're all pretty close although swaying towards Naterston.

I appreciate you help with this....Its not easy reading some of the writing from the certificates.

Regards

Having seen the last image posted I'm going to flip flop back to my original thought for the registrar - Waterston based on the W's in Witness and Weaver

cheers,

Yes, Waterston - check the 'N' and the 'M' of other words and the first letter of Waterston is not the same.

Hi Lil

Can confirm is Waterston. I have folks from Neilston as well and on some of mine the signature is a wee bit clearer.

Yes where the person couldn't read and write the Registrar did witness the mark'x' and the same practice exists today with officvaldom witnessing the mark. Have done it many times when working in dole offices with customers couldn't read or write. Some customs don't change it seems!
