Paton family
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 14:29 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful for any help with finding a marriage certificate for
John Paton b. abt. 1824 who was living in Market Street in the 1851 census. He came originally from Scotland (census info). He married a Margaret Hughes who was born about 1822 probably in Anglesey. My hope is that the marriage certificate will tell me where in Scotland he came from.

Alternatively could one of the subsequent census records have the information.  He died 7th March 1899 at 29 Newry Street.

thanks for any help,

I have found a John Paton marrying a Margaret Hughes on 18 June 1848.   The marriage was a civil registration in Ireland.   His father was Robert and her father was Hugh.

A further search took me to two births for John Paton:

Born 3 Feb 1824
Christened on 8 Feb 1824 Stair, Ayrshire
Parents were Robert Paton and Jane Richment

Christened in Jan 1824 Muckhart, Perthshire ~ United Presbyterian
Father Robert Paton

Whether or not this will be of any help, only you will know ~ I just hope I'm not taking you down a wrong path!   Good luck.

I finally took the plunge and found the original marriage certificate in Ireland. I cannot yet trace Hugh Hughes but I am hopeful that he is the same Hugh Hughes from AMlwch who died on 8 jun 1873 in New Ferry Cheshire leaving a widow Margaret.

The Robert Paton that I needed is the one that married Catherine Marquis in Lanarkshire, but was christened in Muckhart Presbyterian Church in Perthshire. He died in Tillicoultry on 25 September 1870 where there was a huge factory owned by the Paton family.

His father was John Paton who married Jean Hutton - but I don't know where or when!

All that I can give you now, unless you come up with a few more dates, is some information of marriages to Hugh Hughes:

Margaret Evans on 22 Oct 1803 at St Peter, Church Street, Liverpool, Lancs
Margaret Griffiths on 23 May 1827 at St Thomas, Liverpool, Lancs
Margaret Thomas on 25 July 1835 at Runcorn, Cheshire
or
Margaret Ellen Duckworth on 22 July 1862 at St Jude, West Derby, Lancs
Fathers were Hugh Hughes and William Duckworth.

Sorry about that - I was a bit carried away with my discovery!
Margaret Hughes is recorded as being 81 in the 1881 census, so her birth would be around 1800. I have her first child Margaret as born around 1822, so she would have married between 1816 and 1822.

Margaret junior and John Paton married in the Church of Ireland in Dublin, so its possible that their parents were Church of Wales adherents, although subsequent generations were non-conformists.

Robert Paton was born about 1793 in Perthshire (christened January 1793 at Muckhart). I have no dates for his parents,

That is helpful, it confirms what I had read in the census images on Scotlands people. I think that Lollroad should be Tollroad, and that is where Jane Paton was born on 8 Sep 1831.

Is it reasonable to assume that Catherine and George Brownlee were married?

I would say 'yes' I do think that's a reasonable assumption.   However, I've not found a marriage for them ~ yet ............

What I have found though is this:

Cathrine (spelt like that!) Paton b 7 May 1826;  christened 21 May 1826 United Presbyterian, Muckhart, Perthshire.
Father Robert Paton;  Mother Cathrine Marquis.

Jean Paton christened Dec 1821 (as above);  Father Robert Paton

John Paton christened Jan 1824 (as above);  Father Robert Paton

John I have already given you and this certainly looks as though he had at least two sisters.

At the moment I have not come across Robet's parentage.
