James Garvey
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 18:06 GMT (UK) »
I am trying (in vain) to research a James Garvey born about 1800 in Country Armagh. He married a lady called Catherine and they emigrated to Liverpool, England (with children Michael, Owen, Mary, John, James, Thomas, Francis) in 1850/51.

I would be grateful if anybody could offer any advice that may assist my research of these people in Armagh.

Regards

Jean Sandra

Hello Jean Sandra,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Christopher,

many thanks for your help.

The family were catholic so perhaps hope is fading. I don't know their parish just a census mention of being born in Armagh. Perhaps some of the younger children were registered. Do you know how I can check? Is there a BMD site or similar for Ireland? If so that should give me a town hopefully.

Regards

Hi, Here are two of the sites I would use to check details. www.emeraldancestors.co.uk  and www.armagh.brsgenealogy.com   They do cost but if you use the two in conjunction with each other you do not spend so much buying records which are red herrings. Although as you are not sure of were in Armagh your family were from it will be more difficult. There are loads of other sites just use your search engine and you will find them. Also if you find records which are your connection the "Family Ulster" site is a cost effective solution.

Civil registration of births in Ireland began 1864 so if the family left Irelan c1850/1851 there will be no birth certificates to look up in Ireland. For church records you need to know what religion the family were and where they lived (parish if not the actual townland (not town)- having the name of the county isn't enough to start looking for church records (if they still exist)).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Difficult search then.

When they arrived in England they were elusive too!
