james henry CLYDE

Looking for a baptism or birth for James Henry Clyde.  He was born about May 1856, possibly Grahamstown, as he died on 31 Jan 1870 from injuries sustained from a wagon running over him at the age of 14 years.  He is buried at St Patricks Catholic Cemetery in Grahamstown.

If anyone has any baptisms or christenings records for St Patricks, for the year of 1856 I would be most appreciative if they could see if the parents are on the records.  I am trying to trace John Clyde, who I think is James's older brother.  I am not sure if John was born in South Africa or elsewhere.  James is the only other Clyde I can find that is a possible link.

Regards
Jackie

Hi Jackie,
From the cemetery records he would have been born about August 1855.

Hi Jackie,

I have transcribed some of the baptism records for St Patricks (still not done!!) and don't find any CLYDE baptisms between the period 1838 - 1862

I did find this entry in the Burial Registry for St Patricks :
"1870, February 2nd Buried this morning James Henry CLYDE step-son of Serg? LEWIS. R. Engineer, aged 14 years. This poor boy was crushed under a waggon & lived about 24 hours. He was consious when I saw  him & he received Extreme unction.
[signed]J.D. Ricards"

with his step-father being a Royal Engineer, it could well be the case that he was not born in the Cape, but rather travelled there with this mother and step-father.

best wishes
Leanne

I am back to searching again.  seems once the bug is bitten, you can't stop.
I am still looking for John Clyde.  I did find a death notice for him, but it doesn't specify his parents or his place of birth.
any information for this man I would be very grateful. he lived in Cooper street in Port Elizabeth, was born about 1845 (not sure where - deducted age at death from date of death) and was married to a Sarah Sills.

Thank you for the below.
I know that Ellen Elizabeth Sills, daughter of John James Sills, died 11-8-1924, in grey hospital, King Williams Town. She was unmarried. Her half sister Cecilia Margaret Clyde (daughter of John Clyde) used to help Ellen (aka Nellie) in the miller shop she had in East London, so the death certificate is the correct one, as it shows her occupation as dressmaker.
I cannot find Ellens' birth.

I also know that she was baptised into the catholic faith on 11 April 1883 at St Augustines church at the same time as her mother, and was 5 years at the time. The same church that Sarah Jane Sills and John Clyde got married in on 17 May 1879.
I cannot find a death notice for John James Sills either.

John Clyde could very well have remarried, as Sarah died in 1896.
his marriage you sent me, shows him a widower in 1898.
he probably remarried as his children were young.

are you able to help me with birth for Ellen Elizabeth sills or a death for John James sills?
I know you have been a big help, and appreciate it greatly.
