Hi,

bit of an obscure question here however here goes:

Did any member of your Sanders family ever live in the Seychelles.  I am researching Sanders who worked as Mission workers and also as Managers of a plantation there.

kind regards

Dear Princess

I have a family member by name of SAUNDERS of Stonehouse Devon at the beginning of 19th century.

I wonder if Sanders/Saunders are somehow related albeit distantly?

This particular person was a compositor and married and settled in Truro.

Best wishes

Imison

Hi,

It is possible but I'm afraid that this branch of my research has become a "brick wall".

My Sanders was a mission worker and her father was a manager of the plantation that my great great grandfather owned on an island in the Seychelles.  The grew vanilla right up until the first world war, to supply the lucrative perfume and cuisine trade in France and London and then unfortunately the outbreak of WWI and the discovery of an artificial source of vanilla meant it was no longer viable.  I believe they then exported copra which is an extract from the husks of coconuts which is still used in margarine to this day.

It would be lovely to find the Sanders of the Seychelles, I'm hoping that somewhere someone could tell me more.  :)

best regards
Kirsten

Dear Kirsten

I would happily try to look and help you in your search.

Do you have any other details of dates and places regarding your ancestors, not just the ones in Seychelles?

For example maybe certain ships were used and which ports were in use might give you clues as to find out more about your ancestors.

There must be many records for these somewhere I would have thought.

The traders who traded with the company might have records.

Have you checked with places like Companies House?  They might have details going back a couple of hundred years.

Also how about Somerset House records?

What about A2A?  There are many documents also in the British Museum  - have you tried them?

What about the Commonwealth Institute?  Have you tried them?

Just a few thoughts to try and help.

Best wishes

Hi
sorry that it has taking so long to reply.
as far as i know they stayed in England.
my sanders lived in Crediton. then move
to London (st. George's Hanover Square).
I don't think anyone lived  in Truro.

Hello Elaine

Nice to see you again.

Funnily enough St George's Hanover Square does figure in my family tree but not Saunders!

Best wishes

Hello again Elaine,

My Saunders lived in ST GEORGE'S SURREY according to one of the census returns.  They lived in Truro for some years when the Head of household was a compositor but they then moved to Canterbury by the 1861 census.  They then moved to London [but in those days it was part of a county I think].

The womenfolk were in the dressmaking and tailoring line of work.

Best wishes

Imison
