More Than Genealogy
« on: Monday 03 December 07 12:34 GMT (UK) »
Every time I discover ancestors in places unknown to me, I have to look at maps and read histories.

Today I discovered Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland which is known as 'The Kingdom of Fife' because it is the ancient seat of the kings of Scotland.

The Tourist Board's website has this fascinating statement -- 'A visitor cannot spend ten minutes in Dunfermline Town without gravitating to the history soaked walls of the old Dunfermline's Abbey Church and becoming chastened and subdued by the contact.'

After reading that, I realized that there are some folks who could benefit from a visit there.      :) :)

Me too, I've got loads of maps, photos etc. downloaded waiting for me to print off when I get round to putting all my tree into book form.

I doubt the people who need to gravitate,  would do so. :D

Hi Lizzie,

You're probably right about those folks.     ::)

I wonder if most RootsChatters are as interested in the

history and geography as we are.

Perhaps I shouldn't say this but I sometimes find the local history and geography more interesting than the genealogy!

Here in Scotland, by the way, Fife is commonly referred to just as "The Kingdom"

No harm in saying that, John.

For me, this would be a boring endeavour without the

wonderful discoveries I've made.

 :D :D :D Glad to hear that it's not just me  ;D
I take ages to add anything to my tree because I always seem to be looking into another aspect.  ::)
It can be a location, occupation, war record, battle etc. I have learnt so much that I would not have looked into without genealogy and made some lovely contacts along the way.

If it was just a matter of collecting names I would have got bored and stopped doing it years ago.
