Parish Records Notes?
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 14:15 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what the word 'Churched' means in the Baptisms notes of a Parish  Record ???

In the Notes of most peoples, their date of birth was recorded, but in my ggrandfathers and many others, the word 'Churched' appears.

Is it anything to do with the Churching of Women, perhaps?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churching_of_women

... or the part of the baptism when the child was received into the Church (usually after a private baptism.)

:)

Thank you Koromo,

I think you are right because the 40 day rule does look like it was observed.

Baby born 1 January 1899, Baptism 1 March 1899.
Baby registered by mopther 10 March 1899 ...41 st day

The Churching of Women was the common name for the Thanksgiving of Women After Child-Birth. This site gives a comprehensive explanation of 'Churching'
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~mikef/church.html#intro
It is an unusual entry for a Parish Register.

Hi Stan,

Many thanks for the Link, I will read it after this post to you.

You say it's an unusual entry,  many of the Baptisms in the Cornwall on-line Parish Records  for Baptisms, included the word 'Churched' in the Registers  notes.

I wonder if it was a local thing   ???

It could be the "Reception into Church" rite after a private baptism, as it is in the Baptism Register.
