ww1 death certs?
« on: Tuesday 04 December 07 19:04 GMT (UK) »
I know in WW1 there were an enormous number of deaths. :o  Were death certificates issued/recorded or were they too numerous and just not done?

Cheers

Deaths during the War were recorded same as usual. Do you mean deaths of soldiers?

yes I am refering to soldiers.

Frank Commons d9/8/1917.  I have lots of info from commonwealth war graves, national archives, ancestry etc. I know which regiments   he served with etc , but I can't find a GRO ref for a death certificate.

They are available through the ONS just like any other certificates. However, usually the Cause of Death is just Killed or Missing in action and the place of death is France; Belgium etc.

Thanks for all the advice.  Makes sense to be in under overseas and not BMD in british isles - didn't have my thinking head on  ;D

I have now submitted a request to the GRO overseas deaths to see if it exists.  I appreciate it may tell me no more than I already know ( but mother-in-law wants it!)

Merry Christmas
