Hi Crystal
Have just found this thread and my Grandad Ernie Grimes owned the bakery and lived there with his family.  My mum was Freda Grimes and grew up at 8 Roke Road!
Did you find all the info you need or would you like me to supply you with anymore?
Ally X

Hi Ally X,

Did your grandfather every mention the previous owners of the bakery? I'm pretty sure it was Sydney Pike, who lived on Little Roke Ave, just around the corner. He was my grandfather's uncle. My grandfather's cousin Sydney Pike Junior recorded an interview for the Ellis Island Foundation in New York, and he described the bakery and the neighborhood as he knew it in the early 1900's. Perhaps it would be of interest to you.

Hi Crystal.  I can't see how to pm you :)  My email is ally@sweetallyscoops.co.uk.
Have you changed your name as mum didn't have a bridesmaid with your name?
I have contacted my Auntie (Freda's sister) as she is alive and well and will have lots of info. She has done a family tree.
I have just looked through old photo albums and found lots of the bakery and some of Harry!

Norman, no i don't recall the name Pike but I'm sure my Auntie will when I speak to her xXX

Hi Ally
You will find I have another family name :o your Auntie will probably know who I am!
Great to hear that you have photos of the bakery, even some of my Granddad and that your Auntie has done a family tree, I would love to compare my notes and tree.
I did not start my tree until my after my grandparents and parents died so it has been difficult trying to remember what was said from many years ago.
I still have some family photos that I cannot yet put names to.

Speak soon!

Hello from America!

My Grandfather was Sidney Pike's younger brother "Harry". My Great Grandfather (paternal) sold the Bakery when they left for the US. And yes.. they did start up and run a few more bakeries in New York.

My father told me that when he was a child (during the 1950's) that an older black woman told him "Your granddad was the only bakery that would sell fresh bread to us coloreds"

We do have a Photograph of the Bakery dated around 1900ish, along with some other photographs from the same time.

Please contact me directly if you have any questions or are interested in swapping photos.

Hi from the UK,

Good to hear from you and Welcome to the thread, how amazing that you have photos of the Bakery around 1900! That was before my Great Grandfather William James Grimes was there.

I will email you with my details
