Well Gladys (youngest daughter) got married in Sydney, so there's the possibility that some of the others did as well.

oh dear, I wonder what AKA George Thomas Wilmhurst means!

Just butting in late here, without reading the whole thread  :D

AKA means "Also Known As"

since there is a birth reg for that name, it might actually be his real name.

Just looked at the service file, oh yes, it would be his real name (unless he was adopted at birth, and now has reverted back to his real name)

from Raylen
Quote
For what it's worth

GEORGE THOMAS WILMSHURST born 1889 CLIFTON HILL
Father - George      Mother-Ellen Theresa LEGG

ELLEN THERESA WILMSHURST married HENRY BARKLY BINNS 1907

LEGG is actually her maiden name - there was another child with George born 1892 Brunswick, Vic - Edith Ann.  There are also two children previous to that just with mother Ellen LEGG, no father named, may or may not be her.

I cannot find a marriage to George for her in Victoria nor NSW.

George WILMSHURST died 1899 Melbourne South, aged 41
father: Thomas
mother: Ann DENNY
reg: 15146

edit - added later

found the marriage on FreeBMD in England
March quarter 1889
District of Pancras (which spans the boundaries of London and Middlesex)

George WILMSHURST and

appear on the same page.

oh dear this is all very confusing!

Adoption makes sense except for one very strange thing. Keerin is a family name which comes from his "mother"? Eliza/Elizabeth Smedley (nee Mitchell), whose father (born Ireland 1826) and younger brother (born c1867) were both named Keerin!

Christine, I just went back and checked and Raylen had found this: births; KERRIN LESLIE 1891 YARRA FLATS #18519 (Mother - Elizth Mitchell)

He is definitely the son of Elizabeth then, so how does GTW fit in???  :o

the plot thickens!

DORY MAUD 1918 HVILLE #20257

Now I'm more confused :D

Kerrin joined the army in January 1916.
In August 1916 he was in the UK.
In April 1918 he was in hospital in the UK.
He arrived back in Australia in June 1919

Perhaps this wasn't Keeran/Kieran  in the army but George Thomas WILMHURST ;) and he would have therefore named his mother correctly.
