"Firkin" barrel

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place but here goes.

A friend bought this item off eBay.

It was described as a Naval Firkin.

It's only around 6 inches across and 4 inches high. The stopper has an anchor on it.

Could anyone help us to identify the inscription please.

A normal "Firkin" barrel contains 72 pints - which is a fair bit more than what appears that that one would be.

 a bit off topic... but hey it's christmas  ;D

rum was sent up to the trenches in earthenware jugs in the great war, they were stamped SRD

the lads in the trenches said this meant 'seldom reaches destination';
