Irish Ritchie's
« on: Saturday 01 January 05 19:40 GMT (UK) »
I have always believed that my Ritchie roots were Scottish until finding out that my gt gt grandparents were both born in Ireland. The 1881 census states :

Daniel Ritchie               age 47 b Ireland      Laborer
Ellen Ritchie   wife        age 45 b Ireland
Elizabeth Ritchie  dau   age 20 b Rawtenstall (Dressmaker
John Ritchie son            age 18 b Rawtenstall Sizer Cotton
                                                                                  Mill
William Ritchie  Son       age 16 b  Rawtenstall  Turner on
                                                                      at rope walk
Eliza Ritchie Sister         age 50  b Ireland  Cotton Weaver

As 1st child is 20 yoa in 1881 and born in Lancashire I am assuming that Daniel and Ellen left Ireland and settled in Lancashire around late 1850's.

My question is with such limited info on Daniel and Ellen what would be my chances of finding any Irish records on them? and I would also be grateful for any info on Irish people settling in Salford Manchester as there seems to be quite a few there at that time.

Many thanks  :D Newbie

Hi,

I would suggest first that you search for them in the 1861 and 1871 censuses in England as this might give clues as to county or parish or townland.

You might consider, too, that they could have originally been Scottish, but that they fall in the category known as "Scots Irish" or Ulster Scots, a group of Scottish Presbyterians who settled in Ulster during the 17th century. Many Scots Irish and others emigrated, some as a result of the potato famine, most to North America, but some to Britain and elsewhere - and the timing of the move of your family (also my family name) suggests the famine. It was a desperate time.

Hiya

To the very kind people that had replied to my posting, I am so sorry that I have not thanked you earlier, unfortunatly, I have had problems with my computer as well as other things going on, I did not know that I had any further messages on the subject. The info provided will be followed up - thank you.
