Thomas & Catherine Slack
« on: Friday 26 March 04 15:18 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Slack of Brassington and Catherine Fletcher, born in Wath in Yorkshire, were married at Nottingham in 1832. Their son Thomas was born in Ilkeston in 1833, and a second son, George, in Brimmington in 1838. In 1844 their son Henry, three years old, and daughter Ann were christened in Brassington, where their daughter Hannah was born in 1849. At the 1851 census Thomas and Catherine and their children George, Ann and Hannah were in the Ashbourne workhouse. This is the last I have found about them and would appreciate any help.
I am sorry my email is not working

A tribute of respect to the memory,
Musical taste, talent & vocal powers
of Samuel SLACK. This stone was erected
by the voluntary contribution of the Barlow Choir
and a few others admirers of that noble deep-toned
melodist, who died 10 Aug 1822, 63

found this hope it is interesting to you

re Samuel  Slack the Singer.

I found this on a site and cut and pasted it some time ago I can't remember where I found it. Samuel (Singer) Slack . He must have had an amazing voice.

Samuel Slack the celebrated singer, was born in Tideswell in 1737. The famous Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, placed him under the best masters, and his services became in great demand at the principle musical events of the day. A writer of the time tells us that "he never sought to rise above the broad dialect, but was well content with his friends of the 'Catch and Glee Club'," who rehearsed at the angel Inn in Manchester Road.

As a young man he competed for a place in the College Choir in Cambridge. After he had sung, the Precentor rose to his feet to remark, " Gentlemen, I leave it to you whether you will sing after what we have heard." The story goes that none of the other applicants ventured to compete.

Another story concerning Slack is of the singer walking through the fields when he was attacked by a bull. When he began to sing, the bull immediately took to its heels and fled. He died in Tideswell in 1822 , at the age of 65, and was buried in the churchyard near to the wall bordering Commercial Road.
