Gallaghers Kilkenny

I am trying to trace my ancestor Hugh Gallagher, born in Kilkenny in 1831, he married Elizabeth McVie (Betsy) born Dalkieth Scotland, 1840,  in 1857 in Berwick upon Tweed England in roman catholic faith. i do not know when he came across from Ireland and where he came to. as i cannot find any census records for either Hugh or Elizabeth before thier marriage. Hugh's father was listed as Patrick Gallagher on the marriage cerrtificate. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have the denomination of your ancestors which leaves you requiring two items to assist conduct a search for your Gallagher ancestors.

1. Parish
2. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
