Census Folio Reference Numbers
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 15:33 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please tell me where I would find the Folio Ref. no. on census records.

I know the RG refers to the census year i.e. RG12 = 1891
and that the next number after the / is the piece number both of which are found on the small slip which accompanies the record. And I know where to find the page number. It's the Folio number I'm struggling to find.

the folio number is on the top right hand corner of alternate pages - two pages per folio

This does not seem to point out the exception is the 1841 census where the foliation starts with each enumerators book, so is duplicated in each book, therefore for the 1841 census the 'Book' needs to be included in the reference :)

Yes Stan, that is true but Polly was asking about where she would locate the Folio numbers.

But none of this applies to Scottish Censuses where the Registration District/Parish number, the Enumeration District and the page refs are given. RDs and EDs could also be further subdivided if they were very large.

Hi Gaget,
You referred to that web site saying
if you search the whole web page is pretty useful for all things censusie

I was only pointing out that it does not mention the Book Number for the 1841 Census. Folio Numbers are unique for each Piece in all the censuses except 1841. :)
