I've found him!!   :)  :)

Turns out that throughout his life his name seems to have evolved!!  He was registered at birth as Augustine Thompson (in Birmingham).  His marriage certificate shows him as Austen Alfred, the family always knew him as Alfred and that is what was on his death certificate.
His father was Joseph, born in Ireland and I have located his marriage to Lucy Carroll in 1889.  I am now waiting for that certificate to see if it gives any clue to which part of Ireland.

That is good news - you will be able to get Joseph's father's name from the cert. and hopefully proceed a bit further.

I doubt that the certificate will give clues re Ireland but there may be useful clues re witnesses and father as I said before.
I looked last night and there is a Joseph Thompson in Liverpool as a scholar together with a David Thompson - possibilities.
