His death certificate says he was born in Birmingham but apparently this is untrue and I cannot find any trace of him there ( I got a birth certificate for someone that seemed to match but it wasn't him).

Can I play devil's advocate and ask how you know it wasn't him?

Ok.  I have obtained the marriage certificate for my grandfather.  We always knew him as Alfred Austen but he is shown as Austen Alfred Thompson.  It says his father was Joseph, which I knew and that he was the manager of a travelling fair.  It gives an address in Portsmouth (in 1922).  I have tried putting both variants of my grandfathers name into Ancestry and Family Search but got no results that could be possible.  My grandfather was born 8/5 in 1891/2/3/4.  Where do I go now?

He still have been born in England and registered as 'male Thompson' if first name hadn't been chosen. On the other hand if the family was constantly moving around it is possible that they either didn't register him or else waited until later on to register his birth. Have you located the family in 1901 census anywhere?

Hiya,

Yes this looks a distinct possibility. I thought the name Winifred rang a bell and had a rifle through paperwork and my Dad's baptism certificate shows a Winifred A.  It's in Latin but from the my very elementary knowledge I would assume she was his Godmother (Matrina fuit).  Maybe she was also his aunt?

When I get in later I will keep searching for the birth and order the certificate if I find it.  It's not the one I found before.  :)
