Thanks very much for that, Isy!  :D  If I identify any other significant times, I'll come back to you!  Will need to reflect on what you've given me to see if it reflects any light at all on a puzzling disappearance....!  ::)

Hello Jinks(thats my cats name)
London 1684
During an extra-ordinary cold winter a "Frost Fair"is held on the frozen Thames.Streets of stalls are set up.meat is roasted on the spit:football.bowls, ninepins, throwing the cock, even fox hunting are performed on the ice.A novel way of getting about is "sliding with skeets"(skating)
England 16 Feb 1685
At the death of Charles 11,his brother James 11,the duke of York succeeds to the throne as new king of England
England July 1685
Defeated by James 11 army at Sedgemoor, the duke of Monmouth, illegitimate son of Charles11 is beheaded.Last month Monmouth who was exiled 2 years ago after the Rye House Plot, landed at Lyme Regis in Dorset with a small band of men and denounced King James 11 as a usurper
England Sept 1865
George Jeffreys is appointed Lord Chancellor after presiding over the"bloody assizes"in which about 320 men implicated in the Monmouth rebellion were sentenced to death.

No diseases mentioned but maybe the cold weather caused a lot of deaths

Thanks for that Isobelruss

It is interesting to know what was happening when ancestors
were alive in the distant past.

Family legend said that two orphaned boys were rescued from
London after their parents both died from the plague.

The birth of the youngest my direct ancestor was born 1684 and
his mother died in 1685.
