I have some Martins in my family tree, from around the Frome area:

Daniel Martin born c1832, Leigh on Mendip, is as far back as I can prove but I have information (as yet unproved) that his father was John Martin and Sarah (Nee Rossiter).

Daniel Martin m .Mary Ash and their children were:
William, George , Mary Ann, Sarah, Frederick  (and poss more)

Any links with your Family?

Further to my last, my Martins family lived mostly in Nunney and Cloford, only about 4 miles from Mells, so I am keen to learn more of your family.

I have a Richard Martin marrying Mary Vowles by licence on 16 Feb 1778 in Glastonbury. The licence shows Richard was a cooper from Marston Magna but I can find nothing else about him- no baptism and no Martins in Marston Magna. Any suggestions as to where I can go next would be gratefully received.

Welcome to Rootschat

Congratulations for getting as far back as 1778! The furthest back I can go with my Martin line is 1801ish and a John Martin  born in Binegar which is about 20 miles from Marston Magna, though I have not managed to see the parish records yet.

Your Martin line is also the furthest West that I know of  and it would be nice if there was a link as I cannot find a link with the Martins in Frome to the East.

Maybe a silly question but have you checked the surrounding parishes (horrible job I know).

Or.... and  I am sure someone will put me right if I am wrong but was'nt it about this time that people could not just wander from parish to parish. Would their movement have been noted  and approved in quarterly sessions or was it Overseers Records .. or was it some other document ??

Thanks very much. I was very lucky with my Martins as Richard went to Glastonbury when he got married and the family stayed there until 1904 when my great grandparents left and came to Hampshire. I wonder if there is some connection with Binegar - 20 miles is not far. I feel you are right I think I'm going to have to do a blanket search of outlying parishes - sometimes there's no alternative to hard work! You are quite right people were much more restricted as to the places they could travel. I understand that both settlement and removal orders were designed to prevent parishes having the burden of another parishes poor claiming parish relief from them. As Richard was a cooper by trade I don't think this applies to him. He also applied for a marriage licence, himself, to marry Mary Vowles and I think this meant having money for the bond. However they may well be other documents approved in quarterly sessions, as you suggest, and I certainly will look into it. Thank you - you have given me some useful things to think about.

Yes you are right, being a cooper and obviously being able to purchase the bond, he was a man of means; it would be interersting to find out what occupation his father had. I'm afraid my Martins were ag labs

I'm wondering if Richard died young as his only son Joseph didn't follow him in the trade and turned out to be an ag lab as well. Although he did do a long spell in the army fighting in both the Peninsula and at the Battle of Waterloo. I have managed to get his discharge papers from the National Archives which gives a little information and I'm hoping to find out more. Thanks for the website address which I will browse through. I'm afraid I don't know any websites myself - most of my information has come off ancestry.co.uk, familysearch (IGI) and backed up by visits to the record office at Taunton (which is a long day out for us curtesy of the A303). 
There's so much to find but it is fun looking - is n't it.
