Wardlaw family
« on: Monday 10 December 07 11:09 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth Wardlaw married James Jakes on 11th Sept 1813 at Tynemouth.
I can't find her birth or her family.
Can anyone help, please?

Hi Liz,
That seems a hard one. Do you know anything about them after they were married through a census or birth of their children? How old was James and where was he born?
Wardlaw is quite a common Scottish surname as you will have seen if you have searched for Elisabeth Wardlaw in Scotland through 'familysearch'. I put in the years 1786 +/- 10 years and there were too many to choose from.
Hope someone can give you some guidance on this one.

Thanks for the support
James was Christened on 4.10.1789 at Chester le Street
They had 8 children between 1815 and 1831, 3 of whom died in childhood.
I have details of their descendants, but nothing about Elizabeth.

Liz,

Just a couple of snippets on Surnames....

As Rae writes,  WARDLAW is Scottish ( in fact exclusively Scottish) strong in Kirkaldy area and east of Scotland.

Jakes was just as strong in East Anglia.  Non of the two names show up in Northumberland or Durham.

(Source info from Surname Profiler web site)

But change the last vowell in Wardlaw to "O", to get WARDLOW, as copied from Tynemouth Parish marriage record (of 11 Sep 1813) by the legendary transcriber , George Bell, and the surname becomes English, exclusively Cumbrian, centred on Carlisle.  ( See Marriage Index of Tynemouth Parish in the Northumberland section on web site www.genuki.org.uk)

What were the names (in chronological order) of the children of James and Elizabeth ( often the keys to the past are in the future, and vice versa ! )

I haven't got a baptism for Andrew.
1841 Census, the family of Samuel and Isabella Craig are at All Saints, N/cle with  Andrew 8 years old
1851 and 1861 they are at Coxlodge
1971 Andrew (38) and Isabella (nee Jacques/Jakes) (39) are at Longbenton with Elizabeth 10, Martha 8, Isabella 6, and Andrew 3.

Which Andrew are you talking about --didn't I find one in Longbenton for him in 1827?

I have now solved the mystery of where 'Wardlaw' came from - Elizabeth's surname is 'Wardlaw' on the www.familysearch.org record of her marriage to James Jakes.
I am inclined to think that the Tynemouth record of 'Wardlow' is more probably the right one.

Isabella Watson (nee Jakes) married Andrew Craig 11.3.1867.
Andrew Craig being born in 1834.
