Leese from Donnington Wood/lilleshall
« on: Monday 10 December 07 16:18 GMT (UK) »
 Hello,

I would appreciate help in finding information on the following:

Herbert Leese (My great Uncle) is shown on the 1901 Census, as being age 11.  He would have been born about 1890.  This great uncle, I never knew existed.

The 1891 Census show William H. Leese, age 8 - born abt. 1883.  I was thinking here the middle initial "H" could have been Herbert, but there is too much discrepancy in the years.

These children are sons of my great grandparents:  William Leese & Sarah Ann Bradley.

I do hope thst someone can shed light on this.

Many thanks in advance.

Doris

Hi Doris,

Could you post the 1901 census reference for Herbert? I can only see a Leese family where parents are Thomas and Sarah A, and there's a William born 1883 but no Herbert shown in 1901? Unless I have the right family (RG13/2567 136 14) and the boy is Albert (but he was already on the 1891 census with them)?

 :)

OK, so they are the same family. The 11 year old is called Albert, and he was already on the 1891 census as Albert E  :)

(Birth registration Albert Edward Leese Sep 1889 Newport S 6a 754)

Tati.

Thank you so much.  You have cleared up the mystery, on checking this makes perfect sense.

If I could ask you one more favour, could you find anything out about Albert E. (Herbert's brother) William Thomas, born in 1870.  I had checked out William Thomas before, but a relative of mine thought it was William Francis, but I am convinced it is William Thomas.

Again let me tell you how much your help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Doris,

His second initial looks like T indeed both in 1891 and 1881, and the 1871 census spells it out:

1871
RG10/2812 88 18
Lilleshall, Shropshire
Donnington Wood
Donnington Barracks

William Lees, head, 61, Coal Miner
Mary, wife, 60
Ellen, granddau, 7, scholar
/
Thomas Lees, lodger, mar, 22, Coal Miner
Sarah A, wife, 24
William Thomas, son, 1

All born Lilleshall.

The most likely birth registration I can see is:
Thomas William Lees - Dec 1869 - Newport S - 6a 784

Hi Tati,

Thank you very much for your help.  It is awful hard to find information "with an ocean between us" so to speak.

I have another question to ask you and I will try not to bother you anymore.

How would I go about finding out if my Great Uncles & Great Aunts married?  My grandfather, Joseph Thomas Leese, son of Thomas Leese & Sarah Ann Bradley married Julia Humpherson (My grandmother.)

Grandfather Joseph had a sister Julia (1874).  She died at age 19
William Thomas Leese (1870) married unknown
Sabina Leese (1877) married unknown
John Leese (1879) I do know about.  He married Emily Humpherson and came
                              to Canada
William H. Leese (1884) married unknown
Harriet Leese (1887) married unknown
Albert E. Leese (1889) married unknown
George Leese (1883) - never married, came to Canada with brother John
Leonard Leese (1885) - I believe this is the only Great Uncle that I have
                                      nearly completed information,

If I could only receive some information from a marriage indes or such so that I could order certificates.

Sorry for the length of this.

Thanking you again.

 Doris

Have you already checked FreeBMD?  :)
Coverage is quite good (though not complete) until ca. 1917
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Unfortunately the surname Leese is not that rare so there seem to be several possibles (Except for the Sabina who marries in 1904, who is very likely to be yours)
