Henrietta HOCKABRA or HOCKABIA
« on: Thursday 13 December 07 17:54 GMT (UK) »
Despite numerous searchs I cannot find another Hockabra or Hockabia anywhere.Henrietta married Alfred Hart 30/11/1889 in Walkern. The I.G.I has her entered as Hockabra whilst freeBMD has her as Hockabia.
The 1891 and 1901 census show her as being born Hitchin circa 1866.Any help in finding her parentage or real surname(if it is a misprint) greatley appreciated.Regards,Pete 8)

CatOne, I can see a Henrietta HAWKINS in 1891 that matches but she is a servant in London?

Freebmd has HOCKABIA for the marriage.  I can find a few unusual names around the time of Henrietta's birth - Hagaba, Hagobia,Howgebo - to name a few but none seem to be her!

Do you have the marriage certificate, Pete - that would be the way to tie down her father's name & occupation plus witnesses who might help.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hmmm.. May have figured who but not why!!

Your Henrietta and Alfred in the 2 Census after their marriage:

1891: Offley, Hitchin, Hertfordshire
Ref: RG12 /  Piece: 1108 /  Folio 145 / Pg 1
Address: Coach House with Rooms - Vicarage yard
Head: Alfred HART 26, Gardener, b Walkern, Herts
Wife: Henrietta HART 25, b Hitchin
Son: Alfred Seth HART 4 months, b Walkern

(Baby Alfred Seth - birth in Hertford RD 1891 and death  in Pontefract 1892)

1901: Islington (St Judes) London
Ref: RG13 /  Piece: 197 /  Folio: 75 /  Pg  22
Address: 12 T----? King Henry Street
Head: Alfred HART 36, Plasterers Labourer, b Walken Herts
Wife: Henrettia HART 35, b Hitchin
Dau: Mary V HART 13, b Hitchin
Dau: Ethel HART 8, b Pontefract Yorks
Son: Wm. HART 6, b Pontefract Yorks
Dau: Dorothy HART 4, b Hitchin
Dau: Henrietta HART 1, b Stoke Newington London
Son: Alfred HART 1 mth, b Stoke Newington London
Boarder: Robert EDWARDS 26, Plasterers Labourer, b Hitchin

Questions from these Census:
1901: Who is the boarder Robert EDWARDS b abt 1875 Hitchin - a relative?
1901: Daughter Mary V if age 13 - is apparently born abt 1888 before their Nov 1889 marriage
1891: Where is daughter Mary V in 1891 - age abt 3?

It is Robert EDWARDS who leads back to Henrietta prior to her marriage............

Cheers

Chasing Robert EDWARDS - the boarder in Henrietta & Alfred's house in 1901:
Have put the following in Chronological  order (though 1881 was  found first). Have highlighted the 'clues" !

1871: Hitchin (St Mary) Hertfordshire
RG10 /  Piece 1368 /  Folio: 31 / Pg 12
Address: Queen Street
Head: Mary SAUNDERS 31, Widow, Straw Plaiter, b Letchworth
Dau: Henrietta SAUNDERS 4,  b  Colney Hatch,  Mid(dlesex)
Son: Arthur SAUNDERS 1, b Hitchin
Lodger: William EDWARDS 45, wid, Labouer, b Codicote
Lodger: James COOK 18, unm, Labourer, b Hitchin
Lodger: Joshua HAILEY 18, unm, Labourer, b Hitchin
Lodger: Joseph WATSON 19, unm, Labourer, b Walsworth

1881: Hitchin (St Mary) Hertfordshire
Ref: RG11 /  Piece 1419 /  Folio 7 / Pg 7
Address: Davis Alley - Queen Street
Head: William EDWARDS 52, Hay Dealers Lab'r, b Codicote Herts
Wife: Mary EDWARDS 41, Straw Plaiter, b Letchworth, Herts
Dau-In-Law: Henrietta SAUNDERS 14, Straw Plaiter, b Hitchin
Son: Arthur EDWARDS 11, Scholar, b Hitchin
Son: Alfred EDWARDS 9, Scholar, b Hitchin
Son: George EDWARDS 7, Scholar, b Hitchin
Son: Robert EDWARDS 5, Scholar, b Hitchin
Dau: Avis EDWARDS 3, Scholar, b Hitchin

1891: Hitchin (St Mary) Hertfordshire
Ref: RG12 /  Piece 1107/  Folio 163 /  Pg  11
Address: 5 Brickyard - Sunnyside
Head: William EDWARDS 62, Labourer, b Codicote Herts
Wife: Mary EDWARDS 50, Straw Plaiter, b Letchworth
Son: Arthur EDWARDS 21, unm, Tailor?  b Hitchin
Son: George EDWARDS 17, unm, ? (Blazier), b Hitchin
Son: Robert EDWARDS 15, unm, Labourer, b Hitchin
Dau: Avis EDWARDS 13, Scholar, b Hitchin
Dau: Maud EDWARDS 9, b Hitchin
Visitor: (female)  Verge SAUNDER 3, b Hitchin

1901: Hitchin Urban (St Mary) Hertfordshire
Ref: RG13 /  Piece: 1302 /  Folio: 79 /  Pg  18
Address: 48 Sunny Side
Head: Mary EDWARDS 60, wid, Laundress (on own account - works from home) , b Letchworth

William EDWARDS married Mary SAUNDERS 20 Apr 1872, St Mary Hitchin

The Visitor in the 1891 EDWARDS houshoild : Verge SAUNDERS age 3
Is likely May Virginia SAUNDERS - Birth Reg Hitchin Jun Qtr 1888

She is very likely the missing "Mary V HART" age 3 from Henrietta and Alfred's 1891 Household!

So if this is corrrect - it looks like Henrietta was a SAUNDERS and perhaps may have been born in Middlesex though was taken back to Hitchin at a very young age?

Her mother - Mary EDWARDS? nee SAUNDERS?  - or fomerley SAUNDERS nee??

But, where on earth did HOCKABIA come from!  ??? The marriage cert of Henrietta and Alfred may help greatly now, especially to see where Henrietta married from, and witness' as well as name of a father if one is declared. The marriage of William EDWARDS and Mary SAUNDERS may now also be useful to get as the lead seems fairly strong.

Cheers  :D

Probably a red herring - but phonetically Hockabra or Hockabia or Oxborough ???

BIRTH: Henrietta Georgiana Oxborough
Jan-Feb-Mar 1867
Edmonton
Essex, Hertfordshire, Middlesex
Volume: 3a  179

Can't work out the registration district including Colney Hatch. Barnet, Hendon or Edmonton.

Think you will have to get the marriage cert, to see what surname it has on it both for her and her father.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thanks to everyone that has tried to solve the riddle but we do not seem to be getting any further.I know that I could apply for the marriage certificate but with a tree of over 11,000 names it would cost me a fortune to find parents and descendants.
Thanks once again if you would like to see my tree and the Culverhouse database go to
