Thanks to you both.  This fits in with the information I have from my grandmother (his sister).  I have a postcard sent by him to by gran from 'Heddon House', where she said he had been recuperating.  Unfortunately I never found out the nature of his illness or anything more about him. I suppose the next thing is to try and find out his regiment/rank so I am posting a new question to see if anyone can help.
