Jane Lampard
« on: Friday 14 December 07 17:21 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace a marriage for Jane Lampard born 1827 in Sussex. Her family actually came from the Frindsbury area in Kent and on the 1841 census she is shown with her family as living in Kent, but
born in Sussex (as was her brother Joseph) so one must assume the family relocated for a while before moving back to Kent. Incidentally, her parents were Stephen Maynard Lampard and Jane Silver.
I found a possible marriage for her in Greenwich, Vol 5 Pg 393 Dec qtr 1850. If this is correct, then she married James Smith Nickalls.
I found an 1851 census record for Jane Nickalls and Jane Nickalls (one of which was obviously an incorrect transcribe as original record shows James!) but both of these people show being born in Kent. I cannot find a later census record for either of them.
Its possible Jane put her place of birth down as Kent as she probably spent most of her life there, but I am making a lot of suppositions and I would appreciate another pair of eyes and another person's opinion on this one.

Hi again, Suzard.
That census record you gave me was the same one I found on ancestry that was mistranscribed as both being Jane Nickalls. So, it looks like you have come to the same conclusion as me. Thanks for finding the death record for James Smith Nickalls. That explains why they don't show up together on the next census.

Hi Suz,
Thanks for looking. I hadn't got as far as investigating a second marriage for Jane but I will keep your suggestions in mind.......you don't think she was bumping her husbands off do you?

There's an 1861 census record in Kent that might be a reference (I can't find much about Patendin or Patenden, which is the way freebmd spells it - Pattenden seems to be the usual spelling)

1861 Beoxham, Edenbridge, Kent
RG9/490 148/14
James Pattenden, 48, farm labourer ag, b. Kent Westerham
Jane, wife, 48, b. Kent Hewer
Jane Nicholls, granddaughter, 3, b. Edenbridge.

I wonder if the 1854 marriage was for this James and Jane; I think James might be in Westerham in 1841, unmarried, so Jane aged 3 is (probably) the daughter of a child of Jane.  There is an Ann Nicholls, her unmarried daughter, aged 40, living with Jane in 1881, and in 1841 a William and Jane Nicholas in Hever, Kent, with youngest daughter Ann.
