Patrick NORTON/Mary Egan
« on: Friday 14 December 07 21:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I am trying to locate my g-g-grandfather, Patrick Norton (b. Tipp IRL abt 1800) and his wife, Mary Egan (b. IRL abt 1803). They married in Ireland in 1828 (this is stated on Patrick's death cert).

Have found that he & Mary came to Aus on the Isabella 1840. They had their (then 5) children with them - ranging from abt 12 down to 5mths.

On the ships list where I found them

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maddenps/TIPPEM1.htm

it says that the eldest, Mary was 15 (probably bumped up) and that she was born in Ballingarry.

I do have a little more info on them but this is more pertinent to the Australian side - where I will also post this.

Please, does anyone have any ideas as to where I might go from here?????

Any help would be grealy appreciated.

Cheers.

Hello nortybaby,

What denomination were the Egan and Norton families ? Were they  members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or Presbyterians?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hi Monica,

Thanks for your note. At this point I'm no further forward. They're a slippery lot these Norton's. I have them from where they ended up out here but not where they came from. As I said before, they came to Aus from Ballingarry Ireland, where they had been living, and most of the kids were born, but that's about where my head hits the brick wall.

If you can shed any light I would be most grateful!!!!!!

Cheers,
Julie

Do you have an email.  I have worked on the whole family  - they arrived as Knockter.

I don't like putting up stuff on the web.  People take it an claim it as theirs.

Regards
Monica
