Setchell-Clark(e) Marriage, Upwood
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 03:43 GMT (UK) »
A relative of mine, Elizabeth Clark(e), married a Thomas Setchell in 1865 in Upwood, Hunts.  I have now heard that another Setchell/Clark(e) marriage happened earlier and I am trying to work out if the Clark(e) involved is another relative.  From what I have heard, this second marriage was in 1829 in Upwood between James Setchell b1798 Warboys, Hunts (farmer of 150 acres) and Sarah Clark b1811 Upwood, Hunts

Can anyone provide any clues as to Sarah's family?  Many thanks in advance.

Happy Holidays to one and all  :)

You heard correctly - there is a marriage in 1829 in Upwood between James Setchell of Warboys and Sarah Clark of Upwood, on Hunts Marriage Index. Upwood registers have not been extracted onto the IGI or BVRI, nor is a transcript available from Hunts FHS, nor have baptisms been filmed by the LDS (just marriages). So the bad news is that to see if Sarah was baptised in Upwood you need to check the parish register which is held at Huntingdon Records Office. You could check the marriage film at your nearest LDS Family Centre Centre to see if the witnesses provide any clues

In 1851 living with James in Warboys Sarah gives her age as 43 born Upwood ie born 1807/8, and this is consistent in subsequent censuses

Thanks David.  Since I live in Vancouver, visiting the Huntingdon Records Office is a bit beyond my reach at the moment.  I do appreciate the information though.  If I can find out who the witnesses were then that certainly might help, particularly as Sarah might have been under age when she married.

Elizabeth Ann CLARK(E) was the daughter of Thomas CLARK(E). Thomas was born Upwood, according to 1851 census c1800, so its more than likely he is some connection to Sarah.

There is a John CLARK living next door to James and Sarah SETCHELL in High St, Warboys in 1841, aged 64 a wheelwright.

Am I right in saying that Thomas SETCHELL is James and Sarah's son.

Thanks Ian.

I don't know of any relationship between James and Thomas Setchell but it would seem possible that they are father and son.

My investigations of the Clark(e)s has stalled at Thomas Clark(e) (my 3 great grandfather) and I was hoping that finding out about Sarah might give me a lead into knowing more about my direct ancestors.  Ho hum!

Kia Ora
Greetings from New Zealand

1. Try searching (google) "St Peters Church Upwood". The Church is being restored and there is an email address well worth trying! ;)
2. There was a Setchell connection to the Fair(e)y family in Dean Bedford with branches going to Canada.
3. Setchell family here in NZ too, in case you have lost any!
Regards
Marlene

Thanks Marlene.  The only email address I have been able to find was upwoodlhg@btinternet.com and that bounces immediately  :'(  This one was from a page that doesn't seem to have been updated since 2003.  Or was it a different address you found?  One mustn't give up looking  :)
