Ann Hughes - Oswestry
« on: Thursday 20 December 07 08:35 GMT (UK) »
I have discovered an ancestor, Ann Hughes, who apparently was born in Oswestry between 1811-1813.
She married William Wolstencroft and lived in Manchester by the 1841 census. They had 2 children Sarah and William Hughes Wolstencroft.
I would love to find out more about her Oswestry Hughes family. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Regards

Jean Sandra

Hi Jean

I sympathise. Ann Hughes is not the easiest ancestor to find in our area - I have one or two  :'(

It might be worth casting the net a bit wider, Pete,  as many of the surrounding parishes might bring up more clues. One of my ancestors put down Oswestry as a place of birth on two censuses and on then decided it was Kinnerley on the next one  :-\

Pete

That one looks very good  :)

Selattyn is not far from Oswestry at all - 3 miles at the most. Oswestry was the closest town.

It might depend on where Ann lived. it would be easier to say born Oswestry than Selattyn. On at least two censuses, I've said born Wrexham and that was 12 miles from where I was born. If I can do it, so can anybody  :)

Options all open!

Many thanks to you both you have given me an awful lot to think about.

I had anticipated Ann Hughes being difficult to find in your area.

At each census 1851 -1881 she stated Oswestry but as you say it may have been easier to give nearest town.

Regards
