GILLANs in Sligo?
« on: Thursday 20 December 07 22:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

My gg grandfather PETER GILLAN was born in 1823 in Ireland, probably Sligo. At some point he emigrated to Scotland, and married ANN KEENAN in 1843 in Duntocher. I found this on banns from Oct/Nov 1843 although I can't find the marriage cert.

Any references to birth on censuses etc just say 'Ireland'. Peter's death cert just has horizontal lines in place of his parents (obviously he didn't discuss them with his children!) so I am at a bit of a loss to find a birth cert or any records from Ireland. I don't even know definitely that they were from Sligo, only a strong family opinion, and as we know these can often be wrong!

Any ideas where I can go next with this? Unfortunately I am stuck in Coventry so all my research is via the internet.

Thanks for any help  ::)

Civil registration of births in Ireland only started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Peter Gillan. In order to find church records (if they still exist) you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland).

Do you know when Peter died? IGI lists a Peter Gillon died 21 Mar.1876 Glasgow with parents' names as John & Sarah (Collins)- although this is a submitted record and should be treated with caution.

Thanks aghadowey,

I know that the family was Catholic, and Peter died 28/12/1883 in Western Infirmary Glasgow.

Unfortunately all I have to go on at the moment is 'Sligo'.

Was Ann Keenan born in Ireland or Scotland?

In the 1851 census it lists Ann as born in Ireland, and being aged 24. (Peter is listed as GillOn here).

Dunbartonshire, Scotland looks likely from the census return(s). - Keenan/Kaneen is/are from what I understand Manx names? - like I wrote, just a thought.

Thanks for that, I didn't realise the Isle of Man was an option. It is also written in some places as McKinan - would this fit too?

By the way, I'm getting Peter's birth as 1823 by taking his census age (28) from 1851. So I know this may not be the exact year.... :-\
