A brick wall - Elizabeth McDowall
« on: Friday 21 December 07 17:59 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find some information on my Gt. Gran Elizabeth McDowell
Her Father was William McDowell and Mother was Elizabeth Craig. She would have been born around 1892. According to family members they seemed to think she was born in the Highlands. All records I have found so far indicate a glasgow connection.
I have been unable to find a birth register on Scotland’s People or a census register for 1901. Elizabeth Craig died in Childbirth circa 1897 in Glasgow. William McDowell was an Engine fitter. They were married in Paisley.
I have found her Marriage register to Alexander Reid in 1913 which took place in Glasgow. She just seems to have appeared from nowhere!
If anyone can help me, with ideas as to where I can look now, I would be ever so grateful.
 :)

Do you have names of any siblings of your Elizabeth .... a sideways search can often be very fruitful.

There is, for example,  a McDowell family living at 100 Agnes Street in Maryhill, Glasgow for the 1901 census
The father and head of the household is William McDowell aged 41 (an engine fitter)
the children are listed as

William aged 14 : Elizabeth aged 9 : Agnes aged 7 ( written as Anges) : raeberry aged 4 James aged 4 and Alexander aged 3
They also have a 28 yr old housekeeper Mary McFarlane.

No mother is listed for this family and although a potential long shot it may be worth checking if your Elizabeth had any siblings which matched.

A great big THANK YOU. ;D

That is them, i have been searching so long and coming up with nothing. It finally took putting in the housekeepers name, who turns out to be William's second wife.

Thanks again for your help, I can now add more names to my tree.

The children all seem to have been registered as McDowall and born in the registration district of St Rollox.   Can't see a Raeberry but am guessing this could be the Robina b.1896.

William b.1887, Elizabeth 1892, Agnes Craig 1893, Alexander Craig 1898 - only James I can see is shown born 1898.

Hope this helps.
