Campbell's of Drumgoon, Cavan, Ire.

Hello to all who read this note.  Thank you so for taking the time.

My Great Grandfather Elijah A Campbell (B. May 1833 - D. May 1875) , believed to be the son of Joseph Campbell (B. abt 1800 - D. unk) came from Drumgoon, Cavan, Ireland. I have been told that Joseph's wife was named Jane.

It is my understanding that he came to the U.S. with his uncle Henry Campbell (B. abt 1800 - D. unk for now).  Henry's children were all born in Drumgoon as follows: Elizabeth B. Jul 1826, John William B. Jul 1828, Benjamin B. Feb 1831, Jane B. Aug 1833, Adam B. Jun 1836, Henry B. Feb 1841, Margaret Anne B. 1842, Henry B. 1846.
All of Henry's family seem to be buried in Brooklyn, New York, USA.  We are working obtaining death cert. for all above. Should anyone reading this need more info.

I know that Henry was the Uncle of Elijah.  I am hoping that someone there can lend me a hand on that side of the pond...

I am also available to help with searches on this side.

Yes. You've done it correctly ... almost What denomination were the Campbells?

I presume Great Grandfather Elijah (B. May 1833 - D. May 1775) actually in May 1875.

My great-grandmother was Elizabeth (Eliza) Campbell, born 1852 somewhere around Belfast, and emigrated to Montreal in 1873. There also seems to be a connection to Monaghan, possibly a Campbell who married a M'Caldin and produced a baby photographed by the Allison studio in 1902 in Monaghan.

I haven't been able to find anything concrete, but Drumgoon isn't far from Monaghan. OTOH, there are LOTS of Campbells in Ireland, particularly around the border area.

I corrected the date. LOL... wouldn't be nice to live so long.

What denomination were the Campbell’s?  Hmmm... I have a real problem with this question. I found the connection to them leading here in Cavan through the Church of Latter Day Saints. I list them as members.  But... Elijah was married in a Episcopal Church in New York.  Good chance that it may have been the church of Martha (his wife).  I do not know any "Campbell" in my past to know any preferred religion.  My mother was a Donegan and had me baptized a Catholic.

I am sorry, China. My Elizabeth (born 1826) married a M J Robertson from Main and died in Brooklyn, NY.

The family were all in the US (Brooklyn Area) prior to the War Between the States (U.S. Civil War).

Oh China,

I meant to ask... Have you thought about doing a DNA test.  They have test for the maternal and fraternal lines. Many of the Campbell line in the US are listed with Family Tree DNA and/or YSearch.com. 

It did connect me to an individual in the Belfast area. Which went along with what I found through genealogy so far.  I only wish more in Ireland and Scotland would test.  It is the future of Ancestry, I think.

Hello Everyone,

First, please let me thank those of you that have helped so far. I can not tell you how much it means to me.

I must say that all the religion involved with genealogy there, I being from the US find very unusual.  But I am learning the history of the area little by little. I being a Roman Catholic was surprised to learn that my family was not. Gosh, genealogy has so many twist and turns.

Well... my latest up date is that Joseph Campbell (b. abt 1807) along with his brother Henry and Henry's family were from the town of Cootehill. We did find a birth record of one of Henry's children "Benjamin” in Cootehill.

We also found a court record of Joseph being assaulted in 1847 while his 13 year old son watched just outside of Cootehill. It seems that he was a painter and glazer in the Cootehill area.

We still believe that he and his wife Jane died there. I am still looking for any help that I can get.

My husband's family was Thomas William Campbell who married Mary Genoe in 1864 in Drumgoon.  Thomas's father was James Campbell and his mother Ellen Murphy.  This family went to Brisbane Australia around 1865.  Could James Campbell be anybody's relative?

I just came across this thread whilst doing some research on my family history. From what I have gathered my great, great grandmother was Margaret Campbell, whose father was also Henry Campbell, and Mother also named Margaret. Margaret married George Johnston in 1858 at Bailieborough Church of Ireland. Have you been able to obtain death records for all of Henry’s family in the US as I believe that Margaret stayed in Ireland, as I have a death of Margaret Johnston in 1878, buried in Bailieborough Church of Ireland. However I haven’t been able to find any death record for Henry.  I currently still live in the Drumgoon area. I would love to hear from you if you have gotten any further information.
