1904 birth details required
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 18:11 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out the parents of an Alexander Gray Hendry Milne.  born 13th September 1904 Rosebank Cottage. Malcolme Rd. Bucksburn, Aberdeenshire.   This mas was married to my mothers eldest sister,  so was my uncle by marriage.   How ever I have now had it suggested to me that he was also cousin to his wife and her siblings,    I wish to determine how this relationship came about.
Thanx in anticipation,
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

I had some spare SP credits, so I looked up your uncle's birth registration. His parents were John Longmuir Donald Milne, paper mill worker, and Margaret Findlay Milne, née Smith. They married October 30th 1897 in Newhills district, Aberdeenshire.

His father was born 6th March 1873 in Kintore to George Milne and Mary Glennie. His mother was born 3rd April 1869 in Newhills to Robert Smith and Mary Lobban.

This looks like John and Margaret in 1901:

Residence: 12 Malcolm Rd, Newhills, Aberdeenshire
John Milne, m, head, 28, lithographer, Kintore, Aberdeenshire
Margaret ", f, wife, 31, -, Newhills, Aberdeenshire
John ", m, son, 3, -, Kintore, Aberdeenshire
Robert G ", m, son, 1, -, Newhills, Aberdeenshire
William ", m, 3 months, -, Newhills, Aberdeenshire

Hope this helps.

Hi Joe,   Thanx for your help.
But whilst most of what you write makes sence,  I now end up with a dilemma.

But please advise as to why you state that  (if you require more info on george and mary, they had a child born 8/10/1855, magical year for all he was called james).  Why a magical year?

For in later sensus's they have a James born 1861

Hello Stuart

The year 1855 was 'magical' as it was the first year in Scotland of uniform recrds of BMD.  However it was also the only year in which a really detailed amount of info was placed on certs.

From www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
"In addition to details about the child (date, place and time of birth, full name, sex), the parents' names (including maiden surname of mother), father's occupation, name of informant and relationship to child, an 1855 birth certificate also contains information on siblings, the ages and birthplaces of both parents, their usual residence and the date and place of their marriage. Such detail proved difficult to sustain and entries were modified from 1856. Information on siblings was removed, as were ages and birthplaces of parents and date and place of parents' marriage. In birth certificates since 1861 however, the date and place of the parents' marriage was reinstated".

It would appear that 'your' family - identifed by Joekar, had a child born called James in 1855, but that before 1861 he sadly died and another male child was born - given the same name - a quite common practise.  You could obviously confirm by searching on scotlandspeople and obaining the death entry.

Good luck.  Regards,    Steve   :O)
