Morton on Swale 1861/1871 - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 03 January 05 10:56 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS look up John HAUXWELL for me on 1861 or 1871 census for Morton on Swale.

According to 1901 census he was born there around 1860/61.

Interested in names and birthplace of his parents.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Pinetree

Could we have a little bit more info please?

Do you have him on the other census as well ie. 1891/1881?

Where was he in 1901 - I can't find him as John HAUXWELL?

Are we looking for the John HAWKSWELL who was in Thornton Steward age 39 (1901)?

Thank you for your response.

The 1901 Thornton Steward JOHN HAWKSWELL is the one I'm looking for.

In 1891 he was in Carperby where his birth place was given as Worton but he did not appear on the 1861 or 1871 Worton census so I thought this might be a misinterpretation of Morton as given in 1901.

The only possible candidate I can find on 1881 census gave his place of birth as Crakehall, as my John's eldest son Herbert was born there that could also be a possibility.

That's all I have so far I'm afraid apart from the fact that he married Catherine Spence in 1883.

Thank you for the trouble you have taken so far with my query.

Hi Pinetree

I can't find anything conclusive in 1881 or 1871.  Perhaps you will get some more clues ie. father's name/occupation if you can get John's marriage certificate.

Best wishes

Hi Pinetree....
My name is Jennifer Hawkswell and I am a relation of John Hauxwell. He is my Great, great Grandad. He married Catherine Hauxwell and had four children. One of those is my Grandads Dad - Herbert. Herbert changed his name to Hawkswell, when he left Yorkshire and married Alice Maud Lowe in 1907 in Liverpool.
I have a little information on the family. What relation are you? I could maybe help you and vice versa in your search.

Jennifer.
Hauxwell, Hawkswell, Benson, Lowe, Rose, Blackett, Wrightson, Abrahams, Spence, Rider, Lamb, Sutton, Iredale, Wilson, Holmes, Purcell.

Jennifer,

Thank you for your message, its great to hear from someone researching the same family.

This is actually my husband's side and the main link is through John's wife Catherine Spence.  Catherine's Aunt, Susanna Spence was my husband's 3x Gr Grandmother.

Susanna Spence (who's brother William was Catherine's father) had another brother Hawkswell Spence.  Hawkswell was their maternal grandmother's maiden name - she was Elizabeth Hawkswell.

I wanted to try and trace your John Hawkswell back to see if his family was the same as Elizabeth Hawkswell's.

I hope all this makes sense.  I have more information on the Spence side in particular that I would be happy to share with you.  Perhaps you could send me your e-mail address by Personal Message.

All the best,

Pinetree ;)
