TOMS/TOMBS/TOMMS etc - St Albans
« on: Sunday 30 December 07 15:27 GMT (UK) »
William Tombs married Hannah Hall 24 Nov. 1821 St Stephens St Albans.
Cannot find birth for William (so no parents).  He died before the 1841 census as Hannah was a widow then.  Any ideas as to my next move please?  ???
Their children were William (1822 my gggrandfather), George 1828, Mary Ann 1826 and Emma 1833.
I couldn't find a burial for William in the St Stephens parish register.  Hannah was buried 1875, aged 75.

Hi

Not sure if this is your chap but there is a burial for William Toms on the Herts Burial Index in St Stephens, 17th Jan 1841 aged 43.

There are 2 more burials also in St Stephens, that may be significant, William  13th April 1842 aged 72, & Emma 28th Feb 1849 aged 16.

Hope it's of some help.  :)

Hello Maddie

Thank you so much for this info.  I think it could well be the right one, and the older William could be his father, although I have no info. for him at all.  I did find a Mary Toms who died in 1858 at the age of 86 and she might have been William snr.'s wife.
I think Emma must be William's daughter because I have not been able to find her in any of the censuses after 1841 when her age was given as 8.

Thank you again, I really do appreciate your help.  :)

Hi Elaine

You are welcome.

I have just checked the 41 census & there is a William Toms in St Stephens aged 50 with a wife Mary also aged 50 & a Richard aged 25, all born in County.

The ages are well out but they seem to be the only ones coming up. :-\

I'll see if there are any other candidates, in the meantime, hope they are of some use to you.

Hi again

Have just checked the 51 census & Mary Toms is still there this time aged 79 & born Aldenham with her son Richard aged 34. :)

Looks like they are the correct ones on the 41.

Hope so.  :)

Hello Maddie

Yes it does look as though the 1841 ages were way out, which was why I had rejected it when I came across it some time ago.

As I have not been able to find a birth for William round about 1797, or a marriage between William & Mary I am not 100% certain that they were his parents.  I found children for W & M from the IGI as Mary 1800, Elizabeth 1802, James 1807, Richard 1812 and Diana 1815 all born St. Stephens.

There is also a George Toms, who died in 1882, age given as 73, who I can't find a birth for either.  He also gave his place of birth as St. Stephens and ages as 30 in 1841, 45 in 1851, 55 in 1861, 65 in 1871 and 78 in 1881.

Thanks again for your help.  :)

Hi Elaine

Would the George who died 1882 be the one who married Catherine Kiff on the IGI. ? If it is there is a burial of a George Toms 27th Aug 1837 aged 2 that corresponds with the birth of a son George in 1835 to George & Catherine.

Those 4 burials are the only ones for Toms on the Herts B I in St Stephens between 1800 & c1850. Seems strange that the Toms births on the IGI start at 1800, I know from my own research that the IGI has a very good coverage for St Stephens & Aldenham.

I wonder if they moved in from nearby about 1800, just a thought. Mind you, that still doesn't explain the missing birth for George.  :-\

Probably doesn't mean anything but a John Toms was buried in Elstree in 1800. :)

Hello Maddie

Yes the George in question did marry Catherine Kiff and they had 7 children.

On the IGI there is a Thomas Thoms who married Diana Fisher at Codicote, 26.9.1761 and they had a son William bp 16.8.1767 who could have been the William Snr who married Mary.  So perhaps I can see if County Hall have the Codicote parish registers available the next time I am able to pay them a visit.  Or I think they have a register of Herts marriages which might help.  Thomas & Diana also had a son George bp 19.5.1771.  :-\

There was also a Henry Toms who married Susanna Lake at St. Michaels 18.4.1803 but I have no idea where he fits in.

Plenty for me to work on now - I am so grateful for the time you have taken to help me.

Regards
Elaine
