Which System?
« on: Monday 31 December 07 11:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm trying to identify the parents of William Salmon (a cheesefactor) who lived, for most of life, in the parish of Nantwich.  He married Anne Oulton there on the 10 March 1682/3.  Their children were:

Charles (1684-1736), William (1685-1688), Robert (1686-1687), John (1688), George (1689), Anne (1690), Elizabeth (1692), William (1693), Mary (1695), Sarah (1696), Rowland (1699), Catherine (1702) & Thomas (1704).

I seem to remember reading somewhere of a naming system one can use (loosely of course!) to work out how a couple chose names for their children.

With re to the Salmon family, I think the name Charles may have had something to do with King Charles II, as this name has never appeared before in the parish registers I've been searching where the Salmon family had known connections.  Although I can't prove it, I think William may have been the son of one George Salmon of Audlem, which is where, I believe, the Salmon family originated.

There was also a Rowland Salmon living in the parish of Nantwich, who was using the same names for his children as William, & I know George had a son called Rowland in the 1640s.

I'm just sneaking this in hoping Bob won't see it as I have been on his Lexicon board and looked at the posts about family relationships, and I still don't understand it.

Can anyone tell me, what relation to me, my grt grt grandfather's grandson would be?

Also Jayson, my grt grt grandparents first born was James.
There were no other James in either side of the family that I could find, until recently, when I discovered that my grt grt grt grandmother's grandfather was named James.

Nineteen years ago my niece named her son James (without this knowledge) and he is the only child since the first James to be called it.

Also, the first James brother was George, after I presume his mother's Father.  My neice's brother, named his son George (again without this knowledge), so it's very strange how names re-appear in the same family, even though the family history is not known.

He'd be your great uncle or your grandfather.

Hi Lizzie
This ancestor was my grandfather's uncle's son..
God I am so confused  ::) that would make him his cousin then...
My grandfather's brothers would be my great uncles, so would he be a cousin something removed?

Su,

I think your grandfather's uncle's son would be your First Cousin, Twice Removed.
