Shy Tom - Poem in Yorkshire Dialect
« on: Monday 31 December 07 22:33 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone provide me with the full version of this poem  my Grandma used to recite?  I've tried many libraries & antiquarian bookshops.  Bill Mitchell (previously editor of the Dalesman) does not know of it but at least he replied quickly to my email while Dr Kellett did not even reply to a letter enclosing a stamped addressed envelope.

Shy Tom
Shy Tom he waur a bashful chap
Gay company he'd shun
And lassies oft at his expense
Had mony a bit of fun
But Tom waur noan so green
As he waur cabbage looking
He waur engineer by trade
He'd mak a rare good husband
Thought mony a winsome maid
If he nobbut wood come for'ard
It's a pity he's so shy
so they laughed at him in oppen
And made eyes at him on't sly
Now fair Lucy lass o Nancy's
She waur nicest lass in town
Her cheeks were red as roses
And her merry eyes were brown
------------------------------------------
Now they'd all gone on a picnic
As far as Bolton woods
And they'd asked shy Tom to join them
As nobbut reet they should
And they laughed & joked
As young folks will do
--------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------
But Tom waur quick
And he grabbed her
While she cried out
Let me go
--------------
Eh lass noan so!
-----------------------------------------

Hi Binikie,

Can't help out with the poem, sorry.  :(

Have you tried contacting regional newspapers or magazines for Yorkshire?  There must be someone out there who knows "Shy Tom".

Good luck,

Thanks Nanny Jan

The Dalesman used to include poetry but not any more.  I also gave details to a young man at Skipton Library as this is the closest to Lothersdale where Grandma was born but after a long search of about a month, he still couldn't find it.  It may never have been in print but was handed down orally from generation to generation.

Hi Binkie,

Perhaps a local history/family history society might be able to help or possibly the WI; they are often very good on local customs etc.

Will do, Nanny Jan!

It would be a pity if a little gem like this was lost forever.
