A question of distance.

Hi,
please remember I'm an Ausie, places are a long way apart here.
Can anyone please tell me the distance, as the crow flies, from London to Dover? It's just that looking at a map of England and deciding if an ancestor from London would have married someone from Dover, I have no idea if that's a long way or not.

Around about 60 miles.
Nice big river to sail up & down to go between them, so not unreasonable I'd say.

Google earth says 77 miles by road.  Lots of people moved around to find work
so I don't think it's unreasonable

My auto route says from centre of London to centre of Dover is 75.6 miles.

You don't give a date but the road to Dover was always the prinipal route from London to the continent, and the railway from London to Dover was opened in 1842/3, so there would be easy access.

I'd also say there might be a clue in what they/their families did. Tradesmen like shopkeepers would often be supplied by dealers from London.

I've found ParLoc excellent for this kind of thing.

Its free and, as the name suggests, It knows where all the England parishes are and can give you both distance and direction between any two. The interface is a bit odd but easy once you get used to it.
