How long in a parish before marriage?
« on: Wednesday 02 January 08 17:58 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how long a female had to be resident in a parish before she could get married in that parish?

Was it always the bride's parish in which a marriage could take place or could it sometimes be the grooms?
Eaton (Woughton on the Green, Doncaster and N. London), Davis(Shinfield and London), Harrington (Ireland and London), Sutcliffe (Todmorden and London), Williams, Hollingsworth (Thaxted), Lane (Rotherhithe), Fuller (Chesterton, Cambs), Dilley (who knows where????)

Residency was I believe 3 weeks.

It would USUALLY be the bride's parish. Not 100% though.

My grt grt grandmother was born and lived in Dunham Massey (Cheshire) My grt grt grandfather Lymm (Cheshire) but because she was 8 months pregnant at the time, they were married in Warrington.

Many pregnant brides married out of their own Parish.

I've favourited that link - it's extremely useful. Just out of interest does anyone know in which year it became law (or convention?) to state

Name changed by Deed Poll" or "formerly known as ................." or "otherwise" indicate that the bride or groom has changed their name since birth on a marriage certificate?

Hello Su
Just being reminded of my youth. I was born in Blackley Manchester, Moved to Grappenhall just outside Warrington with parents, Father and Mother later lived in Thellwall, then Dad remarried and lived in Lymm. I married a girl from Sinderland Dunham Massey, lived later in Altringham, then Urmston,  Finished up in Germany now back in England.....Now searching for some past relatives in those areas.
The distict names in your post, reminded me of old times
Best Wishes
Happy New Year
