Hi everyone,

Just to bring you all upto date. I ordered a marriage certificate which came this morning. It states Edward Parfrey married Ellen Mary Ward on 7th November 1852 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Wisbech. His father is listed as William Parfrey ( deceased ). Profession of Father listed as Labourer. Residence at time of marriage - Walpole St Peter, Norfolk.

I don`t know what the next move should be?

Any help or suggestions most welcome :)

Many thanks Steve

Hi Steve

As I am sure that you are aware, Wisbech covers parishes in both Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.

A quick search of the Cambs baptismal index 1801 - 1837

http://www.cfhs.org.uk/BaptismIndex/

brings negative results, so I think that the next logical step might be to try to find a baptism for Edward in Norfolk.

I have also tried searching the incomplete Norfolk transcriptions site, again without success.

http://www.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php

I am going to move your post over to the Norfolk board, just in case someone has access to Norfolk Records or who visits the NRO regularly and can help you.  Please get back to me if this also draws a blank and I will move your post back here and we will all have to get our thinking caps on! ;D

Rick :)

Thanks for that Rick. :)

Hopefully some kind person will come up with some information that might kick start this request :)

Thanks again Rick for your continued interest and help

I was at Suffolk Record Office today and thought I'd take a look, and this is what I found.

Edward Palfrey illegitemate son of Sarah Palfrey, born 3rd June, 1829 and baptised 16th July, 1829 at Little Livermere.

Thanks for taking the time to do that Suffolk*Sue :) :)

Its certainly a contender for serious consideration.

The only question I have is, "Would his Father have been listed as William Parfrey on his marriage certificate if he was recorded as illegitemate at birth?"

Really appreciate your time and interest in helping me solve this mystery.

Steve has asked that this post be moved back to the Suffolk board.  To summarize in case anyone can help.

Edward was b c 1832 according to some censuses in Livermere, Suffolk. He married  Ellen Mary WARD on 7th November 1852 at the Wesleyan Chapel in Wisbech. His father is listed as William Parfrey ( deceased ). Profession of Father listed as Labourer. Residence at time of marriage - Walpole St Peter, Norfolk.

Suffolk Sue has found this baptism at Little Livermere (Livermere Parva)

Edward PALFREY  illegitimate son of Sarah PALFREY, born 3rd June, 1829 and baptized 16th July, 1829 at Little Livermere.

Of course it is possible that this is David's Edward, as father's were often "invented" to save face with the in laws, and the fact that he is described as deceased on the marriage record is certainly convenient if this was indeed the case.

If anyone has any further thoughts or opinions or can find Edward on the 1841/51 censuses, I am sure that David would be very grateful.

Rick :)

Just wondering if anyone has access to the 1841 Census and would be prepared to do a Look Up for Sarah Palfrey please. :) :) :)

If Sarah Palfrey gave birth to an Illegitimate son ( Edward ) would he have lived at home with his Mother or would he have been sent to a workhouse?

Any help and advice most welcome ;D

Many thanks Steve

This is interesting.

From the Suffolk Marriage Index

William Hailstone
Sarah Palfrey

22nd March, 1831 = Lt. Livermere

=================

1841

HO107/1036/14 - Pakenham
Folio 3, Page 2
Mill Hill

HAILSTONE
William - 30 - ag lab
Sarah - 30
EDWARD - 12
John - 10
William - 3
Charles - 10 months

==========

Could this be your Edward?  :D

In 1851, the family are still in Pakenham, minus Edward, but with more children. William was born Pakenham and Sarah was  born Livermere. Can't seem to find Edward in 1851 under the name of Hailstone or Palfrey or similar. :'( :'(
