"Thats not the way to do it"

"Thanks ,but I have to say, that this is not the most ideal manner,in which to build your Tree.OK lets say for instance you were to merge your Gedcom File with my own?Can you imagine the scenario, when in future, someone may contact you about a person in my File.Either you would have to say, that you have no knowledge of the person they are enquiring of,which would be pretty mystifying to the person contacting you?Alternatively, the other answer would be to say perhaps;Ah yes, this person's Great-Grandaughter married the cousin of my Wife's Uncle!Either way you look at it,to go down this route,is not really something you should consider. The alternative, pasting the details of perhaps half a dozen new relatives, that are relevant,is much more desirable."

The above,is the answer I have just given to someone on another Site, who I had contacted about a relative of mine, who I had noticed among their new entries. The contact suggested exchanging Gedcom Files, with a view to merging,as an alternative to pasting perhaps half a dozen new relatives details that may be relevant.

Hi William

I've received gedcoms like that. I just create a new gedcom of the people that I want, using the editing facility in my software, and then merge. Checking the details first of course!

If I send details to someone else, I just send them the relevant people, again using the editing software.

I use Family Historian but i think most FH programs have this facility  :)

William,

I agree with your approach.

I will never merge anyone's gedcom with mine.  I have several with the owner's name as the file name and, if I want to put some names from their gedcom into my tree for future reference, I type it in with a note as to the source and what I need to do to verify the information for myself.

Regards,
Josephine

You don't realise how lucky you are finding 'contacts'/'family' - apart from the very 1st feeler I put out 8years ago I've had very little since - so just thank your lucky stars that there are others chasing the same people as you.

MUmsie

Sorry to hear you have not had any luck finding any relations
interested in your family, I had a look at your family interests
and sadly I do not think I am a relative BUT I do know a
prolific Rhodes researcher PM me with details.

He mainly researchs the name in Lancashire and Yorkshire
but I will pass your details on to him.
