« on: Friday 04 January 08 16:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm pretty sure i've got th right couple but the wife's name is given as ellie whenit was alice.  This is on the familysearch site so is it ok to assume its just a spelling mistake?  ???

I've had Alice as Ellis in Census returns.

On the other hand, I've seen names wrongly spelled on IGI (familysearch) - different, if only by one or two letters, to what is actually on the parish register.

Is your Ellie/Alice before 1837?

thanks  :)

I don't know how to put it up but if you put James Campbell for father and Ellie Steel for mother and Great Britian for the region then you will get the results.

Mine is their daughter Barbara who marries Andrew Harris.  I know from her death certificate that her mum was called Alice but I am going to see if I ca find them on the census too be sure!

Bear in mind that the person giving information for the death certificate might not have given the correct name, might not have known how to spell the name or person filling out death certificate might have just put down the name they thought they heard.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

thats true

I have her in the censuses as alice and i've just found her daughter called her daughter Alice as well.

I like the idea thatit could have been her pet name! :)

Caroline

I have an ancestor Camilla who appeared on a census as Minnie.  (No wonder it took me ages to find her!  ::) )  So anything is possible.  I think that Minnie must have been her pet name - but she obviously gave it to the enumerator...
